Amateur Radio Station - WN6JVZ
An old Polaroid photo of my novice station when in Phoenix, AZ. Receiver is the National NC-270 and the transmitter is an Eico 720. Made quite a number of CW QSO's from the Phoenix QTH with just a simple dipole on 40 and 15 meters, using my trusty W.W.II Flameproof Navy Key.
This is a photo of my novice amateur radio station from Oakland, CA. The Johnson Viking Adventurer transmitter was crystal controlled and only put out about 60 watts. The original "final" tube for this transmitter was an 807. I modified this rig to use a 6146 final tube. My first DX QSO was with Matt ZL3JO and was made using this station on 21 Mc., Dec 16, 1970.
During these years Novice transmitters were required to be crystal controlled. I built a home-brew crystal selector using five octal tube sockets and a ten position rotary switch. This made changing crystals much easier and faster. Two FT-243 crystals could be plugged into each tube socket for a total of ten crystals.
The receiver is a National NC-270.
As you can see, our cat found a nice warm place to sit.
